Opéra Royal Versailles: history and description

From dream to realization

Although the idea of a court theater at Versailles dates back to Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” it was only during the reign of his successor that the project came to fruition.

Attracted by the grandiose spectacles of his youth, Louis XIV desired a concert hall equal to royal prestige, capable of housing elaborate mechanical sets. However, advanced age and accumulated disappointments prompted him to divert his energies to the construction of the Chapel Royal (1710).

Despite initial enthusiasm, the theater project remained on the back burner for years. But Jacques-Ange Gabriel, appointed First Royal Architect in 1742, continued to work on the idea.

He convinced Louis XV to send French architects to Italy to study the country’s best theaters. The aim was to acquire the knowledge needed to build a state-of-the-art theater at Versailles, suitable for hosting large events with large audiences and avoiding the construction of unnecessarily expensive temporary halls.

Persuaded by Gabriel, and thinking of the future marriages of his grandchildren, Louis XV finally commissioned the construction of the Royal Opera.

Gabriel was in charge of the overall architecture, incorporating the innovations of the time: oval plan, staggered levels, and “French style” boxes. The result was a theater of perfect elegance and harmony, enhanced by Augustin Pajou’s sculptures and Louis-Jacques Durameau’s paintings.

Another key element was the work of Blaise-Henri Arnoult, the King’s First Theater Technician. He designed an ingenious system of movable floors on winches and pulleys, transforming the hall into a multipurpose space: theater, ballroom, and banquet hall. This ingenious solution avoided the need to set up decorations and machinery each time, reducing costs and preparation time.

Inaugurated on May 16, 1770 for the celebration of the Dauphin’s marriage to Archduchess Marie Antoinette, this extraordinary theater was used only about 40 times before the Revolution.

It mainly hosted royal weddings and celebrations in honor of foreign rulers. The last Ancien Régime event was held on July 18, 1784, a ball in honor of Sweden’s King Gustav III.

Despite surviving the French Revolution, the Opéra Royale was stripped of all its furnishings and decorations.

Louis Philippe commissioned its restoration when he established the Versailles Museum. The stage and its machinery suffered little damage, but the work altered the hall’s original layout (especially the royal box) and appearance (with a uniform red-gold paint job that hid the 18th-century colors).

On rare occasions the theater was used for official performances, such as the one for the opening of the new museum on June 10, 1837.

In 1855, Napoleon III evoked the sumptuousness of the Ancien Régime by holding a lavish banquet in honor of Queen Victoria, and similarly in 1864 with a gala performance dedicated to the King of Spain.

With the fall of the Second Empire in 1871, the newly formed National Assembly left Bordeaux, its initial location, and moved to Versailles, where the government and state services had taken refuge during the Paris insurrection. The Assembly was housed in the Royal Opera, which was converted into a meeting hall.

The constitutional laws of 1875, which finally established the French Third Republic, established two parliamentary assemblies: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The former occupied the Opéra Royal, while the latter took up residence in a specially built room in the south wing of the palace.

This new destination involved radical changes, such as the installation of a new glass roof in place of the Durameau ceiling. Fortunately, the Chamber of Deputies returned to Paris in 1879 before the complete destruction of the stage.

Nearly in ruins by the end of World War II, the Opéra Royal underwent a major restoration overseen by architect André Japy and was officially inaugurated on April 9, 1957 in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II.

Despite the successful restoration of the hall, the project had disastrous consequences for the stage. Most of the original machinery was destroyed, and a senseless full-height fire wall and iron curtain cut off the front of the stage.

Fortunately, between 2007 and 2009, major restoration work allowed the removal of both.

Since 2009, the Opéra Royal has once again hosted a large number of concerts and performances, returning to its original vocation as an artistic and cultural hub.

The theater, with its magnetic appeal and rich history, is now a symbol of resilience and beauty triumphing over adversity.

Visiting it, you can still lose yourself in its incredible architecture, the modularity of the hall and the attention to detail that characterizes it, while admiring the Grand Siècle décor, with its gilded paneling, sumptuous mirrors and glittering chandelier.
